Space exploration, computer technology and large-scale industrialization were altering people's visions of the future. This concept, proposed by Ron Herron of the Archigram group, reflects an optimistic attitude towards technological progress and a bold imagination of the future urban form. This concept was also a response to the urban problems of that time. With the acceleration of urbanization, traditional cities were facing issues such as traffic congestion and environmental pollution. The "Walking City" attempted to solve these problems through mobility and flexibility, while also satisfying people's desire for freedom and change. Although it ultimately failed to materialize, it had a profound impact on subsequent architectural design and urban planning, inspiring people's endless imagination of future urban forms. ### Concept The core concept of "Walking City" is a large-scale urban structure that can move autonomously. This bold idea completely challenges the traditional static concept of cities, proposing a completely new and dynamic urban form. In this concept, the city is designed as a huge robot or vehicle, with the ability to move autonomously. This mobile city can relocate between different locations as needed to adapt to environmental changes, resource demands, or residents' preferences. For instance, it can stay in areas with abundant resources to obtain necessary supplies, or move to more suitable locations when the climate is harsh. This flexibility enables the city to better cope with natural disasters, climate change, or other environmental challenges. Furthermore, the concept of "walking city" also incorporates the idea of modular design. Different parts of the city can be reorganized or replaced according to the needs, enabling the city structure to quickly adapt to population changes or adjustments in functional requirements. This design not only enhances the adaptability of the city but also provides residents with more opportunities for self-selection and participation in urban development. Although the concept of "walking cities" is still technically challenging to realize, it has a profound impact on urban planning and architectural design, inspiring people to think about new possibilities for urban development. ### Drawings ### Further Reading Walking Cities - ATKINSON+CO
