This building is located on a small island in the northern part of Finland, and its design inspiration comes from the layout of Italian hill towns and the courtyard forms of the Renaissance period. Aalto created a solemn yet intimate public space through the enclosed inner courtyard and the towering conference tower. The building is centered around a quadrangular inner courtyard, which is connected to the outside via a large staircase, creating a unique sense of ceremony. This courtyard design not only showcases the functionality of the city hall, but also ingeniously incorporates the spatial atmosphere of medieval and Renaissance courtyards. As Alto said, "Through this mysterious technique, the functions of the government institution can be emphasized." The choice of building materials demonstrated Alvar Aalto's respect for local resources. The exposed red bricks, though in sharp contrast to the surrounding natural environment, coexist harmoniously with the green backdrop of the pine forest. The use of wood added warmth to the building, especially in the wooden truss roof design of the meeting room, which not only fulfilled the structural function but also became the essence of the interior decoration. Alto ingeniously applied psychological principles in his design. He placed the meeting room at the highest point and enhanced its significance through a unique staircase design, allowing people to naturally sense the authority of the city hall. At the same time, the building adopts an open design (such as glass corridors and public squares), making it not only a government office space but also a gathering place for community residents. </aside> ### Architecture + Context ### Interior Space ### Drawings ### Further Reading Alvar Aalto: Säynätsalo Town Hall/Models of the city, of the self, of being in the world
