It was jointly designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano and the British architect Richard Rogers. This building is renowned for its revolutionary design concept that breaks away from traditional norms. All structural elements and mechanical systems - including pipes, air conditioning ducts, stairs, etc. - are placed externally, creating a visually striking appearance. Color coding is also ingeniously employed: blue represents the air system, green represents the water pipes, red is for the pedestrian walkways, and yellow is for the power system, highlighting the industrial aesthetics of the building. This project was conceived by then French President Georges Pompidou in 1969. In 1971, the French Ministry of Culture launched an international competition, in which Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers participated and won. The "Boeuf Plateau", covering an area of two hectares, is located on the edge of the Marais district, right within the dense urban fabric of old Paris. Half of the area is occupied by buildings, while the other half follows an aggressive design strategy, aiming to create a public space - a square, "parvis", which gradually slopes downward to the entrance hall on the underground level. The entire structure of this 10-storey building (7 floors above ground and 3 floors underground) is made of steel. A huge 48m truss spans the entire building. They are connected to the columns at both ends through cast steel "gerberette". This group of huge, visible structural components eliminates the need for internal support, thus enabling the creation of huge open spaces. The resulting 50m wide x 170m long platform can be arranged and equipped for any activity. To achieve maximum flexibility within these vast interior spaces, equipment and flow lines are set outside the structure. Elevators and escalators are included in the supporting structure of the square facade. The escalators wind through the transparent pipes in front of the building, allowing a gradual appreciation of increasingly expansive Parisian views as the elevators ascend. Public facilities are color-coded (blue for air, green for water, yellow for electricity, and red for vertical circulation). The Centre Pompidou deliberately abandons the simple, impregnable monument-like tradition and is completely transparent in both appearance and function. In 1977, after the completion of the Pompidou Center and the adjacent Institute for Acoustics and Music Research and Coordination (IRCAM), the partnership between Piano and Rogers came to an end.
