The design of this building aimed to create a practical yet artistic teaching environment for the art school. McIntosh's design philosophy embodies a modern interpretation of Scottish traditional architecture, while incorporating the design language of the Art Nouveau movement. He employed a design approach that combined simple geometric forms with exquisite decorative details, creating a unique architectural style. The main features of the building are: - The ingenious use of red sandstone exterior and vertical lines showcases a dignified and elegant atmosphere. - The symmetrical layout in the east-west direction, but with flexible and variable internal spaces. - The design of large glass windows provides ample natural lighting for the art studio. - The unique ironwork decoration and wooden interior decoration demonstrate exquisite craftsmanship. - The interior space design that combines functionality and artistry is considered by many to be a masterpiece by Mackintosh, who perfectly unified architecture, interior design, and decorative art. It had a profound influence on the development of modern architecture in the 20th century. </aside> ### Architecture + Context ### Interior Space ### Drawings ### Further Reading The Mac Photographic Archive ✅ Glasgow School of Art - Data, Photos & Plans - WikiArquitectura The architects trying to restore Mackintosh's Library to its former glory Art of restoration: The Mackintosh Building
