Seattle Central Library — Rem Koolhaas (2004)
Mimar / Tasarım Ofisi: Rem Koolhaas |
Yapım Yılı: 2004 |
Konum: Seattle |
Proje Tipi: Karma kullanım, Kütüphane
Design Operation: Addition-Expand, Addition-Inflate, Subtraction-Shear
🗂️ The Seattle Central Library is a public building that focuses on innovative functions, breaking away from the traditional zoning design of libraries. The interior of the library is divided into different floors based on functions. Koolhaas designed a clear flow line, integrating reading, book storage, and activity spaces organically. Using the "book spiral" concept, the bookshelves spiral along the floors, forming a continuous flow line, reducing the complexity of searching for books and greatly improving the space utilization rate. The exterior facade features a unique rhombic grid glass structure combined with a steel frame structure, giving the building a visual transparency and openness, while ensuring adequate natural light intake and energy-saving effects. This library is regarded as a model of 21st-century library design, demonstrating how to redefine the role and functions of public cultural spaces in the digital age. The OMA team achieved the "deconstruction" of the library space through this project, providing the public with a new and highly interactive library experience.
### Architecture + Context ### Interior Space ### Construction Process ### Drawings ### Further Reading Seattle Central Library Curtain Wall Design - LMN Architects An examination of the design theory behind Seattle Central Library by OMA | Double Stone Steel
