Design Operation: Subtraction-Compress <aside> 🗂️ The BUGA Fibre Pavilion was part of the 2019 Bundesgartenschau in Germany and was designed by the ICD and ITKE institutes at the University of Stuttgart. This project demonstrated how bionics principles can be combined with advanced digital construction techniques to create a brand-new fiber composite material building system. The design of the pavilion was inspired by natural fiber structures such as plant fibers and animal bones, aiming to explore efficient and lightweight architectural solutions. **Architectural Form and Structure** The load-bearing structure of the BUGA Fibre Pavilion is composed of 60 custom-made fibre composite components, which are manufactured through robotic winding technology. The pavilion covers an area of approximately 400 square meters, with a span exceeding 23 meters. Its top is covered with fully transparent ETFE membrane, creating a light and open space. - **Bionic Design**: The structure of the exhibition hall imitates the organization of natural fiber composite materials, such as the arrangement of cellulose and collagen. By optimizing the direction and density of the fibers, efficient material utilization is achieved. - **Digital Construction**: The fiber arrangement and density of each component are optimized through algorithms and precisely manufactured by robots, ensuring the stability and aesthetic appeal of the structure. **Materials and Technology** - **Glass Fiber and Carbon Fiber**: The main materials of the pavilion are glass fiber and carbon fiber, which are not only lightweight but also have extremely high strength.
