Design Operation: Displacement-Twist, Subtraction-Grade, Subtraction-Notch <aside> 🗂️ The 2016 Serpentine Pavilion was designed by BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) with the theme of "Deconstructing Walls", presenting the design concept of "Unzipped Wall". The pavilion is composed of stacked glass fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) box-shaped modules, which shift at different levels to form a gradually opening wall, creating a winding space corridor. In terms of material application, the combination of wooden floors and FRP modules creates a contrastive and warm interior atmosphere. This design skillfully blurs the boundaries between the walls and the space: the east-west facade presents a sculptural wave-like appearance, while the north-south facade is completely transparent, allowing the structure to present completely different appearances from different perspectives. Light penetrates into the interior through the gaps between the modules and the semi-transparent materials, constantly changing as the observer moves, enhancing the dynamic experience of the pavilion. In addition, the pavilion not only provides shelter from the elements, but also becomes an interactive social space for hosting events and forums. Bjarke Ingels' design embodies BIG's consistent style, combining minimalist geometric forms with rich spatial experiences.
