Design Operation: Addition-Extrude <aside> 🗂️ Takashi Fujiwara's design concept emphasizes the integration of "nature and humanity". The Serpentine Pavilion 2013 was described as a "transparent terrain" or a "floating cloud". The entire structure is composed of 20-millimeter-thick white steel rods, presenting a three-dimensional grid-like structure. This highly penetrating design blurs the boundaries between the building and nature, as well as between the inside and the outside, making the pavilion seem to grow naturally in Kensington Gardens. The design inspiration stems from the combination of forests and artificial geometry. Through repetitive small square units, the regular grid is expanded into a freely growing form, creating a "floating" sensation that is both orderly and soft. The seats, floor, and roof of the pavilion are all composed of the same steel structure units, providing tourists with flexible social spaces. Tourists can explore different perspectives and experiences within the pavilion according to their own needs, and have unique interactions with the environment. The transparency and lightness of the building enable it to seamlessly blend into the surrounding environment. When visitors are inside, it feels as if they are suspended at the junction where the building meets nature. This design reflects Fujimoto Masahiro's unique understanding of the lightweight and naturalization of architecture.
